Are the Galapagos still active?
This one is for the vulcanologists and fire-bugs.
Yes, Fernandina in the west of the archipelago is the youngest and most active of the Galapagos islands. Its active volcano La Cumbre, last spewed lava on Saturday, April 11, 2009 after four years of inactivity. It previously erupted in the early morning of Friday 13 May 2005 (superstitious!)
Don’t worry, there is no danger and we do not visit the island of Fernandina. There’s a good web site with a satellite image at http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/IOTD/view.php?id=38197
