A new Art in the Andes tour lead by Mali Moir (freelance botanic artist for the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne) is now available. Based in and around the World Heritage sites of Cusco and Machu Picchu in Peru. Dedicated painting days with specialist guidance from Mali. Art in the Andes with Mali Moir and Michèle Adler 14-29 November 2011
Day1. Arrive in Cusco. Transfer to hotel. Rest in afternoon to adjust to the altitude
Day 2. am. Bus excursion to Pisac indigenous market & living museum in the Sacred Valley. Apart from enjoying the indigenous market, there will be an opportunity to gather specimens for painting. pm. City tour of Cusco with local guide
Day 3. All day art immersion in Cusco with local historian. Visit Cusco art museums – Museum of Contemporary Art, pre Columbian Art, Inca museum, various cathedrals, Cusco School of Art - religious
Day 4. am. Train to Machu Picchu with local guide. Plant-spotting from the train – a taste of things to come. pm. Excursion into the Machu Picchu citadel with guide. Exploration of the Inca ruins. Stay in Aguas Calientes.
Day 5. Painting day led by Mali in the cloud forest. Options: Walk along the roaring Urubamba river, visit butterfly farm, local Inca museum and excellent botanic gardens.
Day 6. Painting day led by Mali in Machu Piccu and surrounding cloud forest. Options: Walk out along the Inca trail, climb Cerro Machu Picchu or Wayna Picchu.
Day 7. Travel by train to Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley to explore the ruins & market. Later, transfer to hotel, settle in, then excursion to the Inca granary for aerial view of the town and painting.
Day 8. Painting day led by Mali in the hotel gardens or around the town.
Day 9. am. Excursion along the beginning of the Inca trail to the quarry, painting and picnic lunch. pm. Travel to Urubamba. Transfer to hotel and settle in. Explore hotel gardens including the 7 Chacra Gardens.
Day 10. Painting day led by Mali in the perpetual spring gardens at Willka T’ika. Take a walk in the spiral meditation garden or find some solitude in the heart garden, or set yourself up below the ancient Lucuma tree. There are flowers-a-plenty with hummingbirds visiting and calling.
Day 11. Excursion to Maras salt mines with picnic lunch. Amble along back lanes with a vista at every turn. The walk to the salt mines is pretty enough but when you arrive you’ll find a colourful treat. Painting ‘en pleine air’ led by Mali.
Day 12. Excursion to Moray ancient agricultural terraces which are still used today, surrounded by snow-capped peaks. Picnic lunch in the terraces. Painting ‘en pleine air’ led by Mali.
Day 13. am Guided tour to Urubamba world standard pottery.pm. Afternoon at leisure.
Day 14.am. Return to Cusco via the Inca Fortress of Sacsayhuaman and transfer to hotel
Day 15. am Visit the artists’ precinct of San Blas. Paint ‘en pleine air’ in the San Blas square. pm. Afternoon at leisure
Day 16.am. Depart for Australia
